D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University has once again reaffirmed its position as one of Kazakhstan’s leading engineering universities. From 22 to 26 June, the University’s Prostor summer expedition camp is hosting two major international educational events: the III Kazakhstan Geological Universiade “Satbayev” and the final stage of the KazUzGeoNomads International Summer School.
It is no coincidence that these large-scale events are being held at ЕKTU. For decades, the University has been one of Kazakhstan’s leading institutions for engineering education, preparing highly qualified specialists for the mining, metallurgy, and geological industries. Located in one of the country's largest mining regions, ЕKTU successfully combines strong academic education with practice-oriented training while maintaining close cooperation with Kazakhstan’s leading industrial enterprises.
This year, the expedition camp on the picturesque shore of the Bukhtarma Reservoir has brought together students, young researchers, and faculty members from leading technical universities in Kazakhstan and the Republic of Uzbekistan. Participants include teams from Satbayev University, Kazakh-British Technical University, Nazarbayev University, Caspian University, Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University, S. Utebayev Atyrau University of Oil and Gas, the Geological Exploration College, and the University of Geological Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The key feature of both the Universiade and the Summer School is training in conditions that closely replicate real geological fieldwork. Instead of traditional classrooms, participants engage in field expeditions, geological section descriptions, mineralogy competitions, practical petrography sessions, engineering problem-solving, and consultations with experienced academics and industry professionals.
A significant part of the program is devoted to industrial training. Future geologists will visit leading mineral deposits in the East Kazakhstan Region, where they will gain first-hand knowledge of modern geological exploration and mining technologies. One of the key industrial sites is the Ridder-Sokolnoye deposit, operated by Kazzinc, the University’s strategic partner. There, participants will observe state-of-the-art mining operations, learn about modern exploration techniques, and interact with industry experts.
The program also includes a visit to the Bukhtarma Hydroelectric Power Station, one of the largest and most important energy facilities in East Kazakhstan, providing participants with insights into the region’s energy sector.
Practice-oriented education is one of ЕKTU’s key strengths. The University consistently develops partnerships with industry, enabling students to build professional competencies in real production environments. This approach ensures that graduates are well prepared to meet the demands of today’s mining and geological industries.
In addition to academic activities, participants take part in sports competitions, team-building events, and cultural activities designed to foster leadership skills, teamwork, and professional networking among future engineers and geologists.
The III Kazakhstan Geological Universiade “Satbayev” and the KazUzGeoNomads International Summer School once again demonstrate the leading role of D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University in integrating education, science, and industry while strengthening international academic cooperation. Today, ЕKTU is not only a leading educational and research institution but also an important platform for training the next generation of engineers and geologists who will contribute to the sustainable development of Kazakhstan’s mineral resources sector.
