Professor Zh. K. Idrisheva of the School of Earth Sciences and Togzhan Toktaganov, a second-year doctoral student in the Green Chemistry and Sustainable Development educational programme, participated in the International Scientific and Practical Conference titled “Ways to Mitigate the Impact of Climate Change on Natural Resources in Central Asia for Sustainable Development”, held in Tashkent.
The major scientific forum was organised by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan in cooperation with UNESCO, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), as well as leading international universities and research institutes.
The conference brought together scientists, researchers, representatives of international organisations, and government agencies to discuss evidence-based solutions for adapting the region to climate change, preserving water and glacier resources, and implementing green technologies.
During a thematic session devoted to modern methods of water and climate research, representatives of our university delivered a joint presentation titled “Application of Isotope Hydrology to Assess the Vertical Migration of Heavy Metals: Experience and Prospects for the Irtysh River, Kazakhstan.” The presentation was prepared as part of the implementation of the grant-funded project of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, AP26194633, “Assessment of the Impact of Industrial Enterprises in Ust-Kamenogorsk on Drinking Water Quality” (Agreement No. 400/25-27ГК dated 6 October 2025).
The presentation highlighted the results and prospects of applying nuclear physics and isotopic methods for a comprehensive assessment of the environmental condition of the Irtysh River.
Participation in international events of this scale helps strengthen scientific cooperation, facilitates the exchange of advanced experience, and enhances the role of Kazakhstan’s research community in addressing the environmental challenges of the Central Asian region.
