The 2026 International Digital Economy Forum of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation was held in Urumqi, bringing together representatives of government institutions, businesses, universities, expert organisations and the IT community.

The forum welcomed approximately 500 participants, including more than 200 international delegates. Representing East Kazakhstan Region, faculty members of the Higher IT College at D. Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University — Shahram Soltanbekova, Ainur Kazbekova and Ainur Omartayeva — took part in the event.

The programme focused on digital transformation, artificial intelligence, digital trade, emerging technologies and international technological cooperation. Participants explored current digital solutions and discussed their potential applications across education, business and the wider economy.

Engagement in international forums is particularly important for the Higher IT College. As digital technologies continue to evolve rapidly, exposure to global practices helps faculty update academic content, introduce relevant teaching methods and equip students with skills that meet the changing needs of the labour market.

The forum also provided opportunities to exchange professional experience, establish international contacts and explore potential educational and technology-based partnerships.

The College’s participation contributes to EKTU’s broader development as a centre for digital education. It strengthens cooperation between the University and its College, supports the integration of international expertise into teaching and expands opportunities for collaboration with overseas institutions.

The knowledge and professional connections gained in Urumqi will support curriculum development, new educational initiatives and the continued advancement of students’ digital competencies.
